A cool place to relax
African Reading Hammock
In our hot African climate the Hammock is the perfect place to be. Safely off
the ground away from those bugs and in the cool refreshing air.
Ideal for: reading, listening to music or the radio, for a general feeling
of well being and for gaining inspiration.
The African Reading Hammock is made from natural materials found here in Uganda.
The rope is woven from the very strong fibres of the Sisal plant which grows
abundantly in East Africa. In Karamojaland Sisal is also used for such crafts
as; delicate wig making, rope for cattle and twine for roof construction.
Making the Sisel Rope
A Karamoja man cuts Sisel from near his Village in Lokopo, he then washes, twists and begins to plat the fibres to make rope.
History of the Hammock
The idea of the Hammock spread from the Americas roughly 500 years ago with
the first international traders. It was quickly adopted and modified by different
nations around the world, each one creating their own design and decoration.
In East Africa the early Hammocks were often reserved just for the Chiefs and
important people.
Tying up your Hammock
Find 2 strong trees or posts. Remembering they will have to hold your weight. Tie Hammock so it is taught and not too saggy, this will create a firmer place to lie.
Relaxing into your Hammock
Looking after your Hammock
1. Roll Hammock for easy carrying and storage, do not store in plastic bag as air needs to circulate around natural materials.
2. Store Hammock in dry place when not in use. ie. during the night or during rain storms. If Hammock gets wet, dry throughly before rolling up for storage.
3. Children under 5 should be accompanied with an adult.
