Jewellery project in Kampala

making jewellery

At present we have 6 Karamojong making jewellery.

Simon Lokai the Karamoja Design coordinator visits them periodically and only buys quality jewellery, so keeping a high standard.

The aim is to train the workers to manage them selves, ie. save money for beads and food and to continue to make high quality neclaces.

    Materials used for neckaces

Karamoja Design uses natural materials like wooden beads and seeds mixed with the colourful beads of the Karamoja culture.

The strong point of this union is that the people of Karamojaland have a natural and creative sense of design which can be appriciated both by the city dwellers of Kampala and the Tourists visiting Uganda.

Making Jewellery in Karamojaland - Lokopo -

We have been several times to Lokopo sub county in Karamojaland to encourage them to make jewellery instead of leaving to the city. Lokopo is particularly bad hit by the troubles in Karamoja. There will be another scheduelled visit in September 2007, hopefully other crafts can be found which can be a source of income for this impoverished area.
