Painting Slovakian
Gypsies. 2008
by Simon Bird
On this second trip to see the Gypsies (Roma), I re-visit the villages from my first trip in 2006 to see what has changed. I find, however, little has changed, many settlements still have no electricity, running water or sanitation - it is like the '3rd World' within the European Union.
Read the article from my trip - Slovak Gypsies re-visited 2008.

Czech Panelák
flats. 2008
The last standing big structures from the communist era,
by Simon
During my stay in Prague from winter through to summer, I sketch scenes of everyday life around the Paneláks. I am drawn to the minimalist grandure of the buildings, an echoe of the Communists grand plan for collectivist living, for cheapest price.
