...updated 2nd July 2009

Greetings,
I am currently in Uganda doing some more artwork/research with the Karamoja Tribe. We are launching our New Documentary Film that was created in 2009, and, have plans to stage the first Karamojong Painting Exhibition in Moroto in July...

Documentary Film: Karamoja City Warriors 2010

This Documentary Film follows the story of Lucia, begging on the streets with children, and, eventually, her return to Karamojaland. We listen to what the elders have to say, and, let the women, who are trafficking the children for begging, justify themselves.

The film combines real life video with an animated story, which is from the child’s perspective.

Paintings of and with the Karamojong. 2007-10

From my first encounter with the Karamojong people,
I found them engaging and stimulating to work with.
The stories described by the pictures they created
were a huge inspiration to my own work.

Matriarchal Project. 2005/10 khasi girl with parot
(Disappearing Matriarchal Cultures of the World)
by Simon & Katerina

This is a project to highlight the last societies on the planet that have naturally placed women as equals or even leaders, without them having to fight for their rights. What makes them so different to the West and are they going to survive ?

Khasi & Garo (India), Minangkobau (Sumatra), Zapotec (Mexico), Kuna (Panama), Mosuo and Pi (China).

Slovakian Gypsies. 2006 & 2008
By Simon Bird

In May 2008 I made a return trip to the Gypsy Villages I first visited back in 2006. I discovered many Roma (Gypsy) settlements with no electricity, running water or sanitation. It was like finding, the '3rd World', within, what is now the European Union - shocking !

Czech Panelák flats. 2006 & 2008
(The last big standing structures of the Communist era)
By Simon Bird

This year I returned to Prague, drawn back by the power of the Panelák flats. From winter through to summer in 2006, I was capturing scenes of everyday life around these minimalist blocks of flats.
